Nancy L. Thompson has over thirty years of experience helping consumers, family farmers and small businesses with their debt problems. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Iowa State University and her J.D., with honors, from the University of Iowa College of Law. Before founding Nancy L. Thompson Law Office, P.C. she served as the Farm Law attorney for the Nebraska Legal Aid Society and was an attorney with the Center for Rural Affairs in Nebraska.
In 2015 Nancy was presented with a Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA) in recognition and appreciation for her contributions to the organization. She is currently the Iowa State Chair for the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.
From 2006 to 2008 Nancy was Chair of the Iowa State Bar Association Commercial and Bankruptcy Section. In 2007 she was named Outstanding Section Chair for Legislative Advocacy for her successful efforts to update and improve Iowa’s personal property exemptions on behalf of debtors. She is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the National Association of Consumer Advocates. Nancy has authored several publications and articles about bankruptcy, debtor/creditor issues and farm credit and is a frequent speaker at legal seminars on the topic of bankruptcy, foreclosure and credit. Besides also working part-time as a Staff Attorney at Iowa Legal Aid, she is a single mother of an eighteen year old son.
Melissa Ansley Brooks has been with Nancy L. Thompson Law Office, P.C. for twelve years as paralegal. Melissa received her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and her Master’s Degree in Legal Studies from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
In her capacity as paralegal Melissa works directly with clients in obtaining information, answers routine questions from clients about their cases and assists in preparing court pleadings. Besides her work with Nancy L. Thompson Law Office, P.C., Melissa also teaches paralegal studies classes at a community college, performs numerous volunteer tasks for nonprofit organizations and is raising, along with her husband, a six year old son.
